Question Need help please :)

I got a 4Gb mp4 player from eBay. I thought I was buying the "onda" as it looks identical but has no branding at all, here is the exact player I purchased: 4GB 2.8" LCD Touch Screen MP4 MP3 Player + Card Slot T4 - eBay, MP3 Players, Consumer Electronics. (end time 14-Nov-07 07:07:00 AEDST)

I have taken some shots of it here:

I have been doing a bit of reading and from what I can gather this player uses the "rockwell" firmware? Anyway what I want to do is update the firmware to the latest version, can someone please show me how to do that?

Also I would like to know if it is genuine 4Gb as advertised. I tryed to follow this tutorial ... How To: Removing Memory Hack but the problem I am having is at step 2 when switching to the Partition & Encryption tab I am unable to move ths slider at all and it just shows as 0Mb. I have however formated the player in windows xp using fat32 (as this is the only option) and the player indeed reads as 4Gb.

Thanks for your help guys, also it would be great to know what player I have ie, what make/model. I don't have a clue and it would be nice to visit the manufacturers site for more info, so if anyone knows how to get this info I would be very appreciative Smile

One last thing I forgot to mention, how do I know the size that I need to convert video? I see that there are different sizes, eg is 220x176, what would be the best for a 2.8" screen?

Regards, Fig.

It's an OEM ONDA VX858, but I heard it can't take the VX858 firmware.

The screen resolution is 320x240, so convert video in that.

Do Not Update The Firmware or you will KILL your Player!!!!

You do not have a true Onda or Onda Oem Player & there is no way to tell if its a nock off of the VX858 or VX858LE. The player you have is not from onda or Ecom there factory. But just a look alike from another factory trying to cash in on there success meny factorys can now buy the casing for the VX858 and they use cheap parts to make a replica.

VX858 Has a RockChip & Wolfson sound chip
VX858LE Has only a Rockchip
To check you must open your player but I would just leave it alone because you don't have a Onda.

Onda Oem Packing from Ecom Factory. Looks like this

Onda Retail Packing. Looks like this

Ok now I am confused. After reading and reading all over these and other
forums it seems I do in fact have the oem version of the onda vx858.
Can you confirm that I don't? I would like to load this firmware into it MP4 Nation Forum :: View topic - DON'T LOAD ONDA FIRMWARE ONTO OEM VER. OEM FIRMWARE HERE Am I ok with that firmware or will I brick it?

Thanks for your help and if others can chime in with advice it would be great!

Yes I can Confirm that you don't.

The Facts
Real Onda OEM VX858
1.)Works with Onda Firmware
2.) Maid by ecom onda factory
3.) Comes in the OEM Box above
4.) Has Wolfson & RockChip

Fake Onda VX858 Copy
1.) Does not work with Onda Firmware VX858 or VX858LE
2.) Uses Cheaper Rockchip Only
3.) Has Start Up words like Mini MP4 Player & Bye Bye
4.) Not Maid by Onda Factory

I'm just trying to help I do not want you to kill your player

Real Onda OEM VX858 DO NOT HAVE a "Mini MP4 Player" start up and "Bye Bye" shut off. Real Onda OEM Players Have the same Onda start up background but there is no Onda Logo. If your player say mini mp4 player good day bye bye you just have a Onda copy.

Please understand that there are alot of copies of the VX858 and the firmware on MP4Nation is not Real Onda or Real Onda OEM Firmware so you will gain nothing. It is the same firmware that you already have with the onda logo pasted on the start up and shut down.

To be a true or real OEM product it has to come from the real factory that makes that product for the Onda. If it does not it then just a copy.

Ok thanks so much for the detailed advice. I see now that what you are
saying makes 100% sense. The only reason to upgrade the firmware would be
to make the touch screen better and get more up to date os, but I guess it isn't
meant to be.

It would be nice to know if there is some kind of generic firmware
that can be used for this purpose. I am not going to go through the process
of the MP4Nation upgrade just to get a different logo at start up and shut down.
Yes you are right I do have the "Mini MP4 Player" start up and "Bye Bye" shut off.
Do you know of any way to get updates, more games, or any other upgrades
for this clone? If I had have known about all this prior to purchase I would have
made sure it was an onda and not some rip off. I just assumed it would be
the onda as it looks identical.

Thanks again for your help and I hope that this thread has been useful to anyone
else who is in the same boat as me. My advice DON'T buy a rip off get the real deal!!!

Regards Fig.

That's not totally true... I do have a Onda VX858 emulator, not sure of it is OEM or not... and this player doesn't come with that "Mini MP4 Player" start up and "Bye Bye" shut off... unfortunately I don't recall what was the animation which start the screen but I know it wasn't that nor Onda animation.

Maybe I was lucky to make my player work perfectly with Onda VX878 firmware but agree with MrDAP that if you don't have proper backup firmware you better don't try: Now the problem have become more complex: it exists VX858 and VX858LE that look the same and interchange of both firmware really block the player... I experienced that and I recover my player by short-circuit method and spoiling of the case. Happily I've some experience and all works fine.

Concerning you other doubts:

Your ROCKCHIP player for videos have few but strict rules:

video resolution 320x240
video codec: xvid
audio codec: MP2

this is to start with, then come 20 FPS to be sure of sound synchronization.
