There is a difference between OEM and clone. OEM stands for Original Equipment Manufacturer. The unbranded OEM Onda player means that this player is manufactured by the same company the manufactures the players for Onda (Onda does not do any of their own manufacturing, they are a sales and marketing entity only). It is perfectly fine to buy an unbranded OEM version of an Onda player (provided your reseller can confirm that it is a true unbranded OEM version that they are selling and not a clone.
Now as for clones, there are lots of 'em out there most of the time, but not always, made by less quality manufacturers. We've even now seen Onda VX747 clones that are rockchip based (the Real VX747 us Ingenic JZ4732 based).
So- if you indeed have an unbranded OEM Onda player that is made by Onda's OEM (and have confirmation of this), then you can go ahead and upgrade the firmware. If you have a clone made by someone else then upgrading the firmware will most likely render your player dead.
