| Custom dock icons for your MP4 player How would you like to have a custom icon showing in windows whenever you plug in your MPx player?
The screen shot below will illustrate this better:
As you will see form the above image there are two icons, these belong to my MP4 Ainol V900 player which has internal memory and an SD card, hence there are two pics. You will also notice that the icons appear in the drive list on the left hand side of the image.
First of all please download the file below, this has several icons for you to get started with, extract it to a location of your choice. UPDATE: NEW ICONS ADDED http://www.ebay.vpunk.co.uk/v900/MP4_Dock_Icons.zip

So, here is how we do it, it is very simple I promise. 1. Open notepad or your favourite plain text editor and start a blank document 2. Copy and paste the text below into your new document: [autorun]
icon=\
label= 3. After the text “label=” enter the name of your player (or any text you want), so it looks like this:-
label=My MP4 player 4 now, remember that file you downloaded from above, well, go in the file and choose an icon that you want to use and enter the name, including file extension after the text “icon=\”, so it looks like this:-
icon=\optimusCobalt.ico 5. Save the file as “autorun.inf” to a location of your choice. Remember, if using a plain text editor to actually type the file extension in the save dialog box or else it will save it as a .txt file. 6. Make sure your player of choice is connected to your computer and open it up to its ROOT folder – it MUST be ROOT. 7. Now find the “autorun.inf” you created and the icon you chose and copy them both to the ROOT of your player. 8. Disconnect your player from the computer now and then re-connect it for windows to recognize the autorun file, if all has gone well you will now have a fancy new icons and labels for your player.
To clean up you can make these files “hidden”, this will then hide them from the file view so you don’t delete them by accident etc. Simply right click each file and select “properties”. At the bottom of the box that appears check the box that says “hidden”, voila, they have gone and are out of the way. Note that if you have set windows to “show hidden files and folders” that they will not disappear but just become faded out.
EDIT: provided by goonigoogoo on mp4nation.net thanks
if you have "show hidden files and folders" turned on, but haven't turned off "hide protected windows operating system files", you can pop open a command line and do the following to go that extra level of hiding:
start -> run -> cmd
e: (if your mp4 player shows up as e: drive, for example)
attrib autorun.inf +r +s +h
attrib icon.ico +r +s +h
This process should work for all MPx players that are recognised as a windows removable drive, you can also do this to SD cards, USB drives etc, now you can easily identify your devices by their icon
The icons in the download were created by me (except 2 M6 icons) and cover many mp4 players so you can have an icon that truly matches your player. I am not an icon making expert but have done the best job that I could.
If anyone wants an icon of a player that is not in the ZIP making then leave a message and I will see what I can do
BTW, I use icoFX to create the icons; you can download it from the address below. It is free, easy to use and excellent. Downloads - IcoFX 1.5 Freeware Software |
